Nicolas Longobardi (1559-1654), an Italian,
joined the Society of Jesus in 1582 and came to Macao in 1597 for presiding over the
missionary work in Guangdong.
In the missionary work, he adopted a
different approach from most foreign missionaries. He thought that the
missionaries should associate with the public to get more people to believe in
Catholicism and require all the believers to abandon traditional Chinese
customs.
