Yunnan Tupelo belongs to the
Nyssaceae Family, with the Latin
name of Nyssa yunnanensis. In the world it's only distributed in Xishuangbanna
of Yunnan Province, southwest of China.
Yunnan Tupelo is a sort of
large deciduous arbor, which can attain the height of 25 to 30 meters, with a
chest diameter of 80 to 100 centimeters. It usually grows in moist and sunny
areas in monsoon rain forests in north tropical regions 500 to 1,100 meters
above sea level. The smooth bark is gray or brown, with thin longitudinal
dehiscence. The twigs are covered by thick tawny fluffs. The thick leaf is wide
oval or obovoid, 10 to 22 centimeters long and 5 to 12 centimeters wide, with
blunt leading edge and short tip; its base is in wide wedgy shape, covered by
thick yellow brown fluffs. Yunnan Tupelo is dioecious. The florescence lasts
from March to April (3-4 months) and the fruits ripen after May
annually.
