It
belongs to the Dipterocarpaceae Family, with the
Latin name of Parashorea
chinensis.
The evergreen mega-arbor is 40 to 50 meters high, and 80
meters at the highest, with a chest diameter of 1.5 to 3 meters. It has a
straight trunk, with more than 30 meters high. The brown or seal brown bark
cracks longitudinally in the top and flakes into irregular pieces at the bottom.
The intergrowing leaves are oval and keratinous, 6 to 2 centimeters long. The
inflorescences, covered by fluffs and consisted of 12 to 15 stamens arranged in
2 rows and 5 yellow white petals with 10 to 14 thin longitudinal striations, are
axillary and acrogenous, in spiciform, racemose or conical shape. It bears oval
and egg-shaped nuts covered with thick white fluffs. The nut, 2.2 to 2.8
centimeters long, with a diameter of 1.1 to 1.5 centimeters, has a peaked
leading edge.
It grows
in southward valleys located in the tropical monsoon climate regions at an
altitude of 350 to 1,100 meters, with high temperature, high humidity and calm
wind all the year around. Thus, it is free of frost, and moreover the
alternation of dry season and wet season is distinct. The latosolic soil, sandy
soil and limestone soil develop from purple sandstone, sand shale or limestone.
They usually make up mono-specific seasonal rain forests in moist ravines, base
of slopes and tablelands, with accompanying forests frequently found in Yunnan
Province. It usually blossoms in May and June. The fructescence lasts from
August to October.
It is distributed in the south and southeast of Yunnan
Province and the west of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. High, large and
straight, it is a fine timber with good quality in tropical areas; moreover, it
is of great significance for the study of provincial series of tropical plants
in China.
