It belongs to the Dipterocarpaceae
Family, with the Latin name of Hopea hainanensis Merr.
The evergreen arbor can grow up to 25 to 30
meters high, with a chest diameter of 60 to 85 centimeters. Its pitchy bark has
shallow splits. There are thick fluffs on twigs and inflorescences. The
keratinous oval leaves are 6.5 to 20.5 centimeters long. The conical
inflorescences are acrogenous or borne on top of the axillae with small flowers,
sideling borne on one side of branchy stems of the inflorescence and consisting
of 5 petals and 15 stamens rowed in 2 cycles. The ovary is in the shape of
cylinder, intumescing at the bottom of the interlobule. Its ovoid nut is wrapped
in the swollen base of calyx of which 2 sepals expand into aliform, lance-shaped
and about 7 centimeters long, with 7 to 9 longitudinal
veins.
Hainan Hopea grows near
streamside and gullies, and on southeast slopes and hills of mountainous areas
400 to 800 meters above sea level. It requires such habitat as a place with
torridity, calm wind and moist. It lives in mountainous latosol and latosolic
red soil developed mainly from parent material of granite. Hainan Hopea is a
shade species, with good natural regeneration under
forest canopy. The adult tree blossoms from August to September, and fruits
ripen in March and April of the following year.
It is sparsely distributed over mountainous
areas of Hainan Province. There are only hundreds of adult individuals in
existence. It's a representative and endemic species of rain forests in tropic
ravine of Hainan Province, and of a high value for scientific research. The
timber is tough and lasting, waterproof and mothproof, reputed as the best
species among trees in Hainan. Therefore it is suitable for special
manufacturing, arts and crafts and hardwood furniture. At present, it is
protected on the list of tree species prohibited from lopping and has been
planted experimentally in small areas where it grows
healthily.
