China Pictorial
China Pictorial (Zhongguo Huabao),
also known as People's Pictorial (Renmin Huabao), is a general monthly magazine
featuring fine photographs and informative articles, under the supervision of
the News Office of the State Council and the China Foreign Languages Publishing
and Distribution Administration.
The first issue of China Pictorial was
published in 1950, and late Chairman Mao Zedong inscribed the title for the
magazine.
Over the past fifty years, China
Pictorial has witnessed the development of and changes in China through true-to-life pictures and stories. It is
published in Chinese and foreign languages and circulated in all the
municipalities, provinces, and autonomous regions in China, Hong Kong and Macao
Special Administrative Regions, and over 100 foreign countries, enjoying great
popularity among both domestic and foreign readers.
China Pictorial's publisher, the China
Pictorial Publishing House, established in 1985, is China's only State-level publishing house featuring
pictures and multi languages.
During the last fifteen years, the
publishing house has given full play to its advantages and published a group of
high-quality picture albums, such as Shaolin Kungfu, Vistas of China, The
Natural Features of China, The Giant Pandas, Minority People in China, The Great Wall, and Luoyang Peonies. In 1998,
in particular, it successfully accomplished the task assigned by the
International Communication Office of the CPC Central Committee and published a
large picture album entitled History in Focus to represent the whole course of
President Jiang Zemin's visit to the United States in the autumn of 1997.
The China Pictorial Publishing House
now has 25 full-time editors, 11 of whom are senior professional-title holders,
and qualified translators in a dozen foreign languages, including English,
Japanese, French, German, and Russian. It mainly publishes picture albums, wall
calendars, and pictures for publicity.
