Dalian University of Technology (DUT) is located in the beautiful coastal city of Dalian, Liaoning Province. It is one of the key universities under the direct leadership of the Ministry of Education. Formerly named the Technology Institute of Dalian University, it was founded in April 1949. It is the first formal university established for the need of economic and cultural construction of a New China. The Technology Institute of Dalian University became independent in July 1950 and was named a key national university in 1960. It changed its name to Dalian University of Technology in 1988. The Ministry of Education and governments of Liaoning Province and Dalian City have been jointly constructing the university since 1995. The university passed the preliminary examination of Project 211 and gained special fund support in January 1996. The full Project 211 construction started in 1997.

DUT has a graduate school, 14 specialized schools and 32 departments. At present, there are 3,064 faculty and staff in DUT, including nine members of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering and 1,038 professors and associate professors. There are 12 specially designated professors' posts assigned by "Changjiang Scholar Awarding Project". The total enrollment of students at DUT is up to 30,419.

DUT covers an area of 2,444,000 square meters, with 846,800 square meters being building area. Its teaching apparatuses and facilities value more than RMB200 million. Many newly built buildings, with its completely new modern facilities and first-class network system, have been opened to the public .

DUT is strong in scientific research, with 4 national key laboratories, 4 national level technical centers and 45 graduate schools. It has actively developed exchange and cooperation relationship with over 20 cities, 50 large and medium-sized enterprises, 83 universities and research institutes in 20 countries and regions.

DUT has developed into a comprehensive university of science and technology, focusing on engineering, including applied science, economic management science and disciplines of humanities and social sciences. It has become one of the best universities in China as well as an influential university worldwide.
