With the aliases of Carcajou, Flying Bear
and Moon Bear, it belongs to the Mustelidae family of Carnivora order. Its
scientific name is Gulo gulo (Latin), or Wolverine (English).
With the appearance between bear and mink,
it is 80 to 100 centimeters in length and 8 to 14 kilograms in weight, with a
tail of about 18 centimeters long. It has a large head, small ears, bent back,
short and tough four limbs, and fluffy tail hair. Its curved and long claws can
not be flexibly stretched. On both sides of the body there is a light brown
transverse band from shoulder to tail base, in the shape of "crescent", hence it
has the name "Moon Bear".
Wolverene is a
cold-temperate zone animal. Except breeding season, it mostly moves about alone
with a wide territory of activities -- its footprints can be seen on the frozen
soil, bare rocks above rivulets, valleys, and forest belts. Without fixed nest,
its caves usually have two exits, making it easy to escape from danger. It
belongs to the nocturnal habit animal. Wolverene is alert by nature; its action
is concealed. Expert in swimming and climbing, it is able to jump freely in
dense jungles, hence it has another alias "Flying Bear". It almost has no
natural enemies, with developed scent glands near the anus as a defense. It uses
urine succus to preserve food, which is a unique way to adapt to the
environment. It feeds on various food, including ungulates, rodents, birds and
forest berries, etc. It has a half hiberant habit. When breeding, it builds
nests in tree holes, cliffs, stone slots, or takes up nests of other beasties.
Its oestrus occurs in October to November yearly, attracting isomerism with
yowl. It breeds in February to April the next year with 1 to 5 babies per fetus.
It grows to sexual maturity at the age of 2 to 3. Under breeding condition, it
can have a lifespan of 17 years.
It distributes in the Greater Xing'an
Mountains in Heilongjiang Province and Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, and
part of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. Wolverene is now an endangered species
with a small quantity, and it should be strictly protected
