With the alias of Guenon, it belongs to the
Cercopithecidae family of Primates order. Its scientific name is Presbytis
entellus (Latin), or Hanuman Langur
(English).
Its body is about 70 centimeters long, and
weighs about 20 kilograms. The tail is even longer than the body. It has bushy
beard and eyebrows. The body hair is mostly grey, yellow and brown, with black
face and hoar forehead, cheek, chin and larynx.
It inhabits in tropical rain forests,
subtropical broadleaf evergreen forests, and mixed broadleaf-conifer forests, at
an elevation below 3,000 meters. It dwells on trees, but is also able to walk on
the ground. It usually moves about in groups of tens in morning and dusk,
haunting about stone cliffs in woods on both sides of the valley and feeding on
leaves and wild fruit.
It breeds all the year round, mostly giving
birth to babies in April or May. Female monkey's gestation period lasts 190 to
210 days, who breeds once every two years, with 1 to 2 babies every time. The
female grows to sexual maturity at the age of 4, while the male at the age of 6
or 7. Under breeding condition, it can have a lifespan of about 25
years.
Hunuman Langur has a narrow distribution and
a small quantity in China, only found in southern Tibet Autonomous Region, where
now Jiangcun and Zhangmugou Natural Protection Areas have been established to
protect this species.
It has been listed in Appendix I of
International Trade Convention on Endangered Wild Animal and Plant
Species.
