It belongs to the Anatidae family of
Anseriformes order, with the scientific name of Mergus squamatus (Latin), or
Chinese Merganser (English).
It's about 58 to 63 centimeters in full
length. It is metalescent sap green from head to upper neck, making the aigret
distinct. Its scruff and back are jasper with white sides. The lower foreneck
and the part below chest are white. The sides of upper body have gray scale-like
lines. The female is chestnut brown from head to neck, with aigret. It has gray
back, white belly and wings.
The bird inhabits in forest rivulets and
morass, feeding on fishes and insects. It is endemic to China and has a very
small number, mainly distributed in Inner Mongolia, Heilongjiang and Jilin
provinces. It hibernates south to the Yangtze River.
