The bird belongs to the Phasianidae family
of Galliformes order. Its scientific name is Tragopan blythii (Latin), or
Grey-bellied Tragopan (English).
The full-length of the bird is about 53
centimeters. The male's head is black with orange red and black crista. Its
upper body is mostly salmon, with olive brim and black ovoid spots. From the
lower back downward it gradational turns to brown and the tail is black. The
naked skins on the face and larynx are yellow, with blue laryngeal skin brim.
Tectices of alae have the similar color as the back feather. The remiges are
black and tan with irregular brown spots. The abdomen is gray. Body feathers of
the female are bestrewed with mixed spots of black, brown and yellow.
The bird inhabits in mixed broadleaf-conifer
forests at an elevation of 3,000 meters, feeding on vegetable food. As a
resident bird, it is mainly distributed in Dawang in southeastern Tibet and
Gongshan in Yunnan Province.
Grey-bellied Tragopan has been listed in Appendix I of International Trade Convention
on Endangered Wild Animal and Plant Species.
