New Beijing Museum: No ¡°Dead Corner¡± in Protection

The new Beijing Museum showcases 13 large-scale exhibitions simultaneously, with 5,622 pieces of relics in exhibition and 250,000 relic pieces in the storerooms. This week in an interview with China Daily, some experts in the new Beijing Museum discussed how they are protecting these precious relics.

 Preservation

According to Guo Xiaoling, the museum's curator, the storerooms cover around 10, 000 square meters, while their design can satisfy the storage conditions.

Sound Air-conditioned Environment

In addition, the museum has adopted a "smart" air conditioning system that can maintain stable temperature and humidity. The fluctuation of the relative humidity can be controlled within 2 percent, which can protect the relics from damage. At the same time, the temperature of the exhibition hall can fluctuate with the outside temperature, which can make the visitors feel comfortable.

The cultural relic storeroom has obtained "ten proofs": fireproof, quakeproof, waterproof, theft proof, damp proof, lightning proof, evaporation proof, lightproof, pollution proof, and bacteria proof. According to Mei Ninghua, the director general of the Beijing Cultural Relics Bureau, the door of the cultural relic storeroom is at least half a meter thick, which is absolutely waterproof, fireproof, and theft proof.
