Taipei Chinese Orchestra
Taipei Chinese Orchestra (TCO), established in 1979, is the first professional Chinese orchestra in Taiwan. Within the past seasons, it serves nearly 100,000 audiences with more than 40 concerts every year. Besides, it organizes over 30 student concerts and 24 concerts in communities every year, promoting music education among students and citizens. In the aspect of international cultural exchange, the TCO also has an outstanding record; it has staged concerts in over 20 countries in Asia, Europe, and North America.
In order to deepen the cultural exchange between the Chinese mainland area and Taiwan, the TCO, for the first time, organizes an International Folk Instrumental Competition and Taipei Traditional Art Festival, which has become the most important traditional music gala in Taiwan. In the season 2009-2010, its 30th birthday, it invited many domestic folk music masters including Min Huifen, Liu Dehai, Wu Man, Gong Yi, and Li Xiangting and a group of internationally renowned artists such as Evelyn Glennie and Mischa Maisky. The TCO made a record of Whirling Dance with famous flutist Sharon Bezaly and published it in April 2009. It is the first international album in the history of the Chinese folk music orchestra.
