For historical reasons, Chinese people have a special bond with Russian culture and classical art performances are always the most popular shows in the New Year season.
2009 definitely will not be an exception. The Russian National Ballet Theater brings Tchaikovsky's classics Sleeping Beauty, Swan Lake, The Nutcracker plus Don Quixote. The Russian ballerinas will perform at the Poly Theater from Jan 12-28, celebrating the Chinese Spring Festival, which falls on Jan 26 this year.
Tchaikovsky's ballets are always the best choice for families to celebrate the holiday together. According to a poll, the Nutcracker is the children's favorite while the other three entertain people of all ages.
Tchaikovsky's continuing popularity and the durability of his music is a phenomenon studied by scholars and music critics. Many think the answer can be found in the degree to which Tchaikovsky dared to explore and express in his music the full range of human emotions and feelings.
Tchaikovsky's house-museum in Klin, 70 kilometers north of Moscow, was his last residence where he created many of his most famous pieces. It is frequently visited by people from all over Russia and other countries. Fans are ushered along squeaky oak floors and the number is steadily increasing. Last year there were 86-thousand visitors, up from 60-thousand in 2003.
