The three companies are also unique in not being based on a hierarchy: there are no echelons such as corps de ballet, coryphies, soloists and principals; all the dancers are of equal status. Finally, NDT is unique in having its own state-of-the-art theater in The Hague, with a magnificent stage, five studios and every necessary facility, perhaps the only theatre in the world specifically created for dance.
Kylian's association with the NDT began in 1973 with his first ballet Viewers for the company as guest choreographer. In 1975, he became the dance company's artistic director, a post he retained until 1999. He remained associated with the dance group as resident choreographer and has created more than 73 ballets for NDT.
Despite the development of a unique and very personal style - Kylian's choreographies defy academic categorization by blending elements of various sources. There are always new inspirations to be explored, new challenges to be met and boundaries to be overcome. Profoundly based on musical reading - his work seems to be unveiling hidden traces of our being through his dance.
For 21 years now, Kylian's artistic vision has blended with the image of Nederlands Dans Theater into a unique symbiosis.
