Mainland film director Jia Zhangke received the Outstanding Artistic Achievement Prize on Friday, March 14, 2008 for his contribution to the movie industries in the recent ten years at the 10th Deauville Asian Film Festival in northern France.
Jia Zhangke, 38 - year - old, the Chinese new generation director, directed his first feature work in 1998, which entitled, "Pick Pocket", tells of the experience of a pickpocket in Jia's hometown Fenyang of North China's Shanxi Province and took the Orizzonti Doc Prize at Venice Film Festival in 2007. Besides, he won the best director prize for his film "Still Life" at the first Asian Film Awards in Hong Kong in 2007, which was shot in the old village of Fengjie.
Famous French director Cedric Kahn issued the award to Jia. "From 'Pick Pocket' in 1998, moviegoers around the world began their journey to explore a unique understanding of human nature," Kahn said, referring to Jia's first film. "There always is some enlightening discovery when Jia's version intertwines with reality. His movies clearly depict human nature in his nearly 10 years of experience."
Upon receiving the award, Jia said: "One needs courage and judgment to praise a director who has only directed films for a decade. From 'Pick Pocket' in 1998 to 'Useless' in 2007, my work has changed a lot with the reformation of Chinese society. For me, when facing the complexities of society, silence is the best choice. However, every time I stand behind the viewfinder, it is the movie that helps me overcome my weakness and maintains the most basic love and sense of justice. Thanks, moviegoers!"
