New Year Concert by the Asturias Symphony Orchestra

 

The OSPA has shared the stage with some of the prestigious soloists such as: Luciano Pavarotti, Alfredo Kraus, Montserrat Caballé, Carlos Álvarez, Ainhoa Arteta, Elizabeth Connell, Ana Mª Sánchez, María Orán, María Bayo, Alicia de Larrocha, Joaquín Achúcarro, Josep Colom, Marco Rizzi, Marc-André Hamelin, Elmar Oliveira, David Geringas, Janine Jansen, Asier Polo, Renaud Capuçon, Anne Gastinel, the flamenco singers Carmen Linares and Ginesa Ortega, among others.

During all these years, prominent Asturias young artists such as Lola Casariego, Juan Castelao, Pablo González, Dimitry Atapin, David Menéndez, Ana Nebot, Alejandro Roy, Mariano Rivas, Mª José Suárez, etc. have performed with the orchestra.

The first recordings of the orchestra are devoted to Asturias works and composers, among them it must be mentioned the CD´s Día de fiesta en Asturias, Atardecer and Paisaje Asturiano (Benito Lauret), a recording entirely dedicated to the music by Julián Orbón and La Noche Celta by Ramón Prada. Afterwards, the orchestra has recorded for ARTEK and NAXOS works by Manuel de Falla, El Amor Brujo, La Vida Breve, El Sombrero de Tres Picos etc., and most of the complete works by Joaquín Rodrigo, Concierto de Aranjuez, Concierto Andaluz, etc.

Some titles from our musical heritage such as Los amantes de Teruel by Tomás Bretón, the baroque zarzuela El imposible Mayor en amor le vence Amor by Sebastián Durón, have been revived and works such as La Noche Celta by Ramón Prada, “Fons vitae” by Jesús Rueda have been commissioned, to name some, or the rediscovering of XIX century Spanish symphony works (Pedro Miguel Marqués, among others).

The OSPA, heiress of the Asturias Symphony Orchestra, founded in 1939 being its first conductor Amalio López and subsequently historic names such as Ángel Muñiz Toca, Vicente Santimoteo, Benito Lauret, Alfonso Ordieres and Víctor Pablo Pérez, will celebrate its fifteenth anniversary on May 2006. It made its official debut on the 12th of May 1991 at Campoamor Theatre, under Doron Salomon´s baton, being its first chief conductor Jesse Levine.

In honor of the celebration of OSPA´s anniversary, the orchestra will be led by many leading international conductors besides Maximiano Valdés, Ros Marbá, López Cobos, Alberto Zedda, John Axelrod, Antonino Fogliani, Howard Griffiths, Tania León, Edmon Colomer and Mstislav Rostropovich, together with the soloists Bruno Gelber, Indra Tomás, René Pape, Luciana d´Intino, Marco Berti, David Menéndez, Julian Rachlin, Renaud Capuçón, Anne Gastinel, Roberto Díaz, Arto Noras, Louis Lortie, etc, as well as the Prince of Asturias Foundation, Orfeón Donostiarra, Comunity of Madrid and RTVE choirs.

The OSPA is an Autonomous Organism established by the Department of Culture, Social Communication and Tourism of the Principality of Asturias and is a member of the Spanish Association of Symphony Orchestras, AEOS.
