New Year Concert by the Asturias Symphony Orchestra

 

The Asturias Symphony Orchestra, OSPA, is formed by musicians from 19 different nationalities from the EU, Russia, USA and Latin America under the principal baton of Maximiano Valdés.

In its musical activity, there is a broad variety, performing more than 70 symphonic concerts a year between its permanent venue Auditorio Príncipe Felipe in Oviedo, Jovellanos Theatre in Gijón, Casa de Cultura in Avilés and the main Asturias villages during the Summer Season Concerts. Among the extraordinary concerts, it must be mentioned the institutional ones such as the Asturias Day and The Prince of Asturias Awards Concerts, and the special series Family concerts and youth concerts.

 It participates regularly in the Oviedo Opera Season, being praised by the regional and national press “a great part of the Elektra success is due to the orchestra and its conductor” (El País 24-09-04).

In the Season 2004 -2005 the orchestra set on a tour performing at Palau de la Música in Barcelona and at Castellón and Zaragoza Auditoriums being again praised: “Among the three best Orchestras of Spain” (Levante El Mercantil Valenciano 24.04.05). In the previous season the orchestra has performed successfully in Euskadi.

As regards international tours, in 1996 the orchestra set on its first international tour around Chile performing in the Teatro Municipal and Santiago de Chile Cathedral where has gone back in 1998, then moved to Mexico Federal District at Auditorio Arquímedes de México DF. It has also participated in several of the main Spanish musical festivals such as: Festival de Música y Danza in Granada, Festival Internacional de Música contemporánea in Alicante, premiering works by Jesús Rueda, Jesús García Román, José Luis García Demestres, etc., Festival Intercéltico in Lorient (France) with a premiere of the work “La noche celta” by Ramón Prada, an Asturian composer.

It has been led by distinguished conductors, apart from the principal conductor Jesse Levine and the present principal conductor Maximiano Valdés, names such as Arturo Tamayo, Odón Alonso, Krzysztof Penderecki, Víctor Pablo Pérez, Aldo Ceccato, Alexander Rahbari, Tamás Vásáry, Jan Latham-Koenig, Cristóbal Halffter, Juan José Mena and Alberto Zedda, that have contributed to its success.
