About Rembrandt van Rijn (1606 - 1669)
Rembrandt Harmensz van Rijn is certainly the most famous of Holland's seventeenth-century painters. He was born in 1606 in Leiden, the fifth son of the miller Harmen Gerritsz van Rijn. Rembrandt studied under the Leiden painter Jacob van Swanenburch and under Pieter Lastman in Amsterdam. It was through Lastman that he discovered the powerful contrast of light and dark. In his years in Leiden Rembrandt painted numerous biblical scenes, small in size, with great precision and bright colours.
In 1631 he moved to Amsterdam. As he established himself, he received commissions for portraits and taught countless pupils. Increasingly, paintings of this period feature strong contrast between light and dark, a loose brush and a convincing portrayal of the subject's expression. In his history paintings Rembrandt invariably chose an innovative and decisive moment in the story.
