Huang Tingjian, Master of Pemanship

On June 6, a picture of part of the calligraphy work Dizhu Ming (Inscription on the Chief Cornerstone) was sold for a record high of 390 million yuan (about $57.1 million) at the Poly 2010 Spring Auction. The sale also broke the record for calling price for single items, with 10 million yuan per bid at the auction.

Dizhu Ming, a calligraphy work by Huang Tingjian, one of the four best calligraphers of the Song Dynasty, was written in the Chinese running script style on a 15-meter scroll, which is Huang’s longest existing work.

 Huang Tingjian

Huang Tingjian (1045-1105), from Fenning (modern Xiushui in northwest Jiangxi province), was a famous poet, calligrapher and essayist. He grew up in a family of noted scholars and artists, including his mother, Lady Li, a skillful painter and qin player. Huang Tingjian is said to have been particularly filial toward her.
