Flower arrangement began as a Buddhist practice, since the earliest attention to floral art came from Buddhist monks. After the mid-Ming dynasty, flower arrangement became a specialized subject studied by artists and scholars. Eventually, this was also reflected in gardens and architecture, and literature from the time.
For instance, one book, "Bottle History" was written by a famous Ming Dynasty author, and poet Yuan Hongdao, discuses floral arts. Yuan Hongdao was a Chinese poet of the Ming Dynasty. He lived during the Wanli period (1573-1620). Yuan’s family had been military officials for generations, but Yuan showed an interest in literature from youth and formed his own literary club at age fifteen. At the age of twenty-four, in 1592, he took the chin-shih examination and subsequently received an official position in 1595. However he quit out of boredom after a year, and in 1593. Yuan traveled and consulted with the radical philosopher Li Zhi. His and his two brothers' poetry were known for their clarity and sincerity.
