Sixty Years’ of Memories at Tian’anmen

In 1964, thirty-two-year old Chen Shi, an engineer at a water resources department of Shanxi province, posed on the Jinshui Bridge in front of the Tian’anmen Tower. In 2009, she stood in the same place again. Now living in the US permanently, she is retired and came to China to visit relatives during the nation’s 60th anniversary.

In 1969, Mao Lianyu (L), a staff member of the PLA, stood with his mother at Tian’anmen Square. In 2009, the retired Mao stood on the square again with an empty chair representing his late mother.

At Tian’anmen Square in 1970, Ma Huiyun, Chen Guiling, Zhou Jinhua, and He Junxia (left to right), all students from the Niujie Primary School for the Hui Ethnic Group at Beijing, posed for photos with their green army uniforms on, the most popular clothing style at that time. In 2009, the women, all retired, stood at Tian’anmen Square in the same order and posed as forty years ago.
