The symbolism of Tian’anmen Square and Tian’anmen Tower, two of the major landmarks of China, stands for more than a six-hundred-year-old building in the eyes of many Chinese. With Tian’anmen as the background, several people-focus photos taken almost sixty years ago were recaptured in 2009, reflecting the changes and development of New China.
The old photos were recreated in 2009 in the same season as they were taken before, using people’s same poses and facial expressions. Below are a few examples:
Yang Zhenya (R) and his two comrades-in-arms stand in front of the Tian’anmen Tower one day before the founding ceremony of the People’s Republic of China on October 1, 1949. In 2009, Yang stood before the Tower again but this time he posed alone, as his two comrades-in-arms had passed away. Yang was a former director of the August 1st Film Studio, China’s only film production unit under the administration of the PLA. He is now a member of the China Film Association.
In 1958, Ying Deyi (R), a PLA soldier, and his wife Zhang Jinfang, together with their three-year-old daughter Ying Zuowa (L) and six-year-old daughter Ying Daiya, stood before the Tian’anmen Tower. In 2009, the whole family posed again before the Tower. Younger daughter Ying Zuowa (L) became a teacher and the eldest daughter, Ying Daiya (third from the left), went on to study in Germany and is now working at Siemens.
