In August of 1958, the CPC central committee held an enlarged meeting of the Political Bureau, which marked the beginning of the nationwide campaign of galloping steel-making, part of the Great Leap Forward. The Great Leap Forward between 1958 and 1960 was aimed at advancing the economic strength of China on a large scale and in a short period of time. It eventually failed and caused severe damage to the national economy because it violated the law of economic development.

"The communal canteen is our home"——in 1959, this slogan hung on the wall of a Wuxi residents’ canteen in Jiangsu province.

During the Great Leap Forward in particular, a number of communal canteens were established for the peasants’ meal time in the busy growing season.
